Character.AI Review 2026: Free and Polished, but No Adult Content

Character.AI is an app for chatting and role-playing with AI "Characters" — personas with their own name, personality and backstory.

Most are made by the community, and you can build your own in a few minutes, give it a voice, and drop it into scenes, images and short videos.

It is powered by the company's own large language models and is, at its core, free to use. One honest caveat the company states itself: Characters "make things up", so it is built for entertainment and creativity, not as a reliable source of facts.

Knowing who runs an app matters, because that is whose terms and privacy policy you are trusting.

Character.AI is operated by Character Technologies, Inc., based in Menlo Park, California, and was founded in 2021 by two former Google researchers, Noam Shazeer and Daniel De Freitas.

In August 2024, Google signed a non-exclusive licence for its technology and brought the founders and much of the research team to Google DeepMind; despite that deal, Character.AI remained an independent company.

It is a large, mainstream operation rather than a fly-by-night app — which shows in the polish, and in how seriously it now treats safety and regulation.

Every figure below is taken from Character.AI's own help centre or official blog and was checked on 10 October 2026. Prices are listed in USD and vary by region, tax and promotion, so confirm the current rate at checkout.

Two things we could not confirm from an official page on 10 October 2026, because the Terms and full Privacy Policy pages would not load: the exact base signup age (third-party summaries say 13, or 16 in parts of Europe) and specific data-retention periods.

Character.AI bundles chat, character creation and a growing set of media tools on one platform:

• A huge Character library: millions of community-made personas across fandoms, assistants, tutors, languages and original creations.
• Character creation: define a persona's personality, greeting and voice, and share it with the community.
• Voice: Characters can speak with selectable voices, and you can create voices.
• Images and video: tools like AvatarFX and Imagine Chat turn Characters into images, scenes and short videos.
• Scenes and Feed: guided role-play scenarios, plus a community feed for sharing creations, stickers and reactions.
• Paid tiers (lite and c.ai+): add a daily or unlimited allowance of "premium chat styles", fewer or no ads, more memory and chat customisation; c.ai+ also skips the waiting room, generates replies roughly 2–3× faster, and adds early access and a badge. The free tier is ad-supported.

Worth naming up front, because the company says it itself: Characters can fabricate answers, so treat it as entertainment, not research.

And unlike adult-focused companions such as Candy AI, none of this extends to explicit content — that is a deliberate product choice, covered below.

Character.AI's headline is unusual for this category: the core product is free, with unlimited messaging.

There is no message cap and no trial clock — free users can chat as much as they like, though the free tier is ad-supported and uses the standard chat styles.

There are now two paid tiers above it — (c.ai) lite and c.ai+ — and it is worth understanding what each adds.

One nuance worth getting right: paying changes the experience (chat styles, ads, memory, speed), but Character.AI states that the content and moderation are the same across tiers — "the content outputted by Characters is currently the same" — so a paid plan is not a way around the content filter.

You can cancel any time; cancellation takes effect at the end of the billing period, and the company says it issues no partial refunds for unused time.

Prices are in USD and vary by region, tax and promotion; lite's "$4.99/mo" is from its FAQ and c.ai+'s "$9.99/$94.99" from the c.ai+ offer terms, both checked October 2026 — Character.AI has been changing this line-up, so confirm the current rate at checkout before you buy.

This is the single most important thing to know before signing up, especially if you arrived here from an adult-companion comparison: Character.AI does not allow pornographic content.

It states it "does not and will not support the use of the software for vulgar, obscene or pornographic content", that this stance "is final", and that asking for the filter to be removed "will result in a ban".

On privacy, Character.AI's documented stance is reasonable for a mainstream app.

It collects what you provide plus interaction data (usage, IP address), says plainly that it does not sell your personal information, and complies with regional laws such as the GDPR and CCPA/CPRA, giving rights to access, correct, delete, object to and port your data.

Account deletion is self-serve and permanent, and you can request a full export of your data (it can take three to four weeks, with a download link valid for seven days).

One thing to decide for yourself: your chats are used to train and improve the models.

The company reduces personal information before training and lets you opt out by de-selecting "Improve the Model for Everyone" in settings (the step-by-step is written for EEA/UK users, and the right is set out in the Regional Privacy Disclosures).

Even after opting out, feedback and some data for search, recommendations and safety may still be used. We could not confirm specific data-retention periods from an official page on the day we checked, so we are not stating any.

Safety is where Character.AI has changed most.

Following lawsuits and regulator questions about how AI chat affects teenagers, the company removed open-ended chat for under-18 users from late November 2025; minors keep creation features (Imagine Chat, AvatarFX, the Feed) but can no longer have free-form conversations with Characters.

It now runs "age assurance" — signals plus, where needed, a selfie check through a third-party provider (Persona), with ID requested only as a last resort and held by the provider, not Character.AI. For adults this means open-ended chat is effectively an 18+ feature.

Use Character.AI if you want free, high-quality, safe-for-work chat and role-play: fandom characters, creative writing partners, language practice, tutoring-style personas or building your own Characters with voice and video.

For that, it is one of the best options available, and it costs nothing — c.ai+ is a nice-to-have for speed, not a requirement.

Skip it if you want adult or NSFW role-play — the no-sexual-content policy is firm and permanent, so this is the wrong tool and no subscription changes that.

Skip it too if you need factual reliability (Characters invent things) or if the user is under 18 and wants open-ended chat, which is no longer available.
