What Grindr's free grid offers, why its scale stays unmatched, and the privacy fine and final-sale billing to weigh.

Quick Verdict
Very Good
Grindr is the strongest choice for gay, bi, trans and queer people who want a large nearby grid with open messaging, backed by 15.0 million reported monthly users. The free tier is usable, and XTRA mainly buys an ad-free grid and more profiles.
It is a weaker fit for anyone who wants refunds, two-factor login or a clean data record, since purchases are final, no 2FA is documented and a NOK 65 million fine was upheld on appeal.
Unlimited costs the most and is worth it mainly for Incognito and unsend. Overall it is a good but not top-tier product, held back by price opacity and privacy history.

Grindr is a location-based dating and hookup app for gay, bi, trans and queer people, sold in the app stores by Grindr LLC and owned by Grindr Inc. (NYSE: GRND).
It shows a grid of nearby profiles with chat, and its FY2025 annual filing reports 15.0 million average monthly active users.
The free tier is usable but ad-supported. XTRA and Unlimited remove ads and add filters and privacy tools, all purchases are final, and the company has a documented privacy record that includes a fine that was upheld on appeal.
This Grindr review is research-based, and the short verdict is that it is the obvious default for its audience but a mid-scoring product on price and privacy.

What Grindr Is and Who It Serves
Grindr was founded in 2009 and presents nearby users as a tiled grid, closest first. There is no swipe or match step, so a user can message any profile on the grid.
That open model is the app's main draw and the root of its main complaint.
Without a matching gate, the grid is fast to use but also open to unwanted messages, and the App Store listing shows reviewers complaining about ad frequency and sparse free-tier results.
The App Store listing describes the service as the "world's #1 free dating app serving the LGBTQ community". That is the operator's own marketing claim, and the review treats it as such.
What Grindr Costs: Free, XTRA and Unlimited
Grindr uses a freemium model. The free tier has the grid and chat with ads, and two paid tiers add features.
A third AI tier called Edge is being tested in Australia, New Zealand, select US cities and Canada, with randomized test prices for some users.
- Free: ad-supported grid and messaging; the help center does not publish the exact profile cap.
- XTRA: no third-party ads, up to 500 nearest profiles, five global Explore chats a day, saved phrases, read receipts, five expiring photos a day, premium albums and Grindr Web.
- Unlimited: everything in XTRA plus unlimited profiles, Viewed Me, typing status, unlimited expiring photos, global Explore, For You, Incognito mode, chat translation (1,000 characters a day) and unsend within 24 hours.
Pricing varies by country and plan length. The US App Store lists XTRA items from $14.99 to $22.99 and Unlimited items from $27.99 to $44.99, plus a $9.99 Unlimited Day Pass and an $11.99 Boost, without showing which item is monthly.
Grindr's help center says all purchases, including subscriptions and microtransactions, are final and non-refundable. Subscriptions bought through Apple or Google are managed in those stores, so cancelling is done there.
Worked Cost Examples
Because plan lengths are not shown in the store listing, these are estimates from the listed price range only. Check the exact price in the app before buying.
- Casual user on the free tier: $0, with ads and a capped grid.
- Ad-free user on XTRA: est. $14.99–$22.99 per item, depending on the plan and country.
- Privacy-focused user on Unlimited: est. $27.99–$44.99 per item for Incognito, Viewed Me and unsend.
- Weekend traveller: est. $9.99 for the Unlimited Day Pass, for one use.
The value question is mostly ads versus no ads. Incognito and unsend only exist on the higher tier.
Privacy and Safety: The Documented Record
Grindr handles unusually sensitive data, because membership alone can reveal sexual orientation. Its record should be read in that light, in the past tense and as reported by the sources linked below.
- 2018, HIV-status sharing: in April 2018, BuzzFeed News and the research institute SINTEF reported that the app shared users' HIV status and last-test date with two outside software vendors. Reports say Grindr then stopped doing so.
- 2019 to 2020, forced sale: a US national-security review body ordered the app's Chinese owner to sell it. It was sold in 2020 for a reported $608.5 million.
- 2021, Norwegian fine: in December 2021 the Norwegian Data Protection Authority fined Grindr NOK 65 million (about €6.5 million at the time of the decision, roughly €5.5 million at 2025 exchange rates). The finding was that user data was shared with advertising partners without valid consent, and that the data revealed sexual orientation.
- 2022 report: the Wall Street Journal reported that location data from the app was sold through ad networks between 2017 and about 2020.
- 2024 to 2026, UK claim: a group claim filed in London in April 2024 over alleged pre-2020 sharing of HIV status and other data was settled for £26 million, according to a September 2026 SEC filing. The settlement includes no finding or admission of liability.
The Norwegian fine was upheld by the Privacy Appeals Board, then the Oslo District Court, and finally the Borgarting Court of Appeal on 21 October 2025. The 2018 HIV-status report and the 2021 fine are separate matters.
Account Security and Age Checks Today
The help center documents no two-factor authentication. Its security article recommends an app PIN or biometric lock and a unique password instead.
Age checks use a one-time facial age estimate with a liveness video, required in the UK, Australia (since December 2025) and Brazil (since March 2026), or when underage use is suspected. Government ID is only a fallback, and the check is not identity verification.
The help center says generative AI features can be switched off in privacy settings and that sensitive health data is not used for AI features.
Anyone in a country where being on the app is risky should weigh the record above before using any location-sharing app.

Grindr Versus Other Apps
Each rival below solves a different problem, and the notes come from verified store and help pages.
- Sniffies: map-based cruising, web-based today, free with ads plus a subscription. See the Sniffies vs Grindr comparison.
- Feeld: for open-minded and kink-curious dating, with one paid plan called Majestic. See Grindr vs Feeld.
- Pure: an anonymous hookup app where chatting needs a subscription. See Pure vs Grindr.

How This Review Was Researched
This review rests on documents, not use.
In October 2026 we checked Grindr's help center (tiers, refunds, age checks, security), its App Store and Google Play listings, its FY2025 annual filing, a 2026 report on the UK settlement, and Norwegian consumer-council coverage of the court outcome.
No account was created and nothing was purchased or used directly. The sub-scores therefore reflect documented features and third-party consensus, which carries lower confidence than direct use.
Prices come from the US App Store listing and may differ by country, plan and test group.

Frequently Asked Questions
Yes. Grindr is free to download on iOS and Android with an ad-supported grid and chat. The help center does not publish the exact free profile cap, and XTRA and Unlimited remove ads and add features (checked Oct 2026).
The US App Store lists XTRA items at $14.99 to $22.99 and Unlimited items at $27.99 to $44.99, without showing plan lengths. Prices vary by country and plan, and an Unlimited Day Pass is listed at $9.99, so check the price in the app.
Generally no. Grindr's help center says all purchases, including subscriptions and microtransactions, are final and non-refundable. Store-level billing rules from Apple or Google may still apply.
It has a documented privacy record. In 2021 Norway fined Grindr NOK 65 million (about €6.5 million at the time) for sharing user data with advertisers without valid consent, and the fine was upheld on 21 October 2025.
A 2018 report found HIV status shared with software vendors.
None is documented in the help center as of October 2026. The security article recommends an app PIN or biometric lock and a unique password.
Yes, Grindr Web exists, but it is currently available only to XTRA and Unlimited subscribers. New accounts must be created in the mobile app.
Grindr is 18+. It uses a one-time facial age estimate with a liveness video in the UK, Australia and Brazil, or when underage use is suspected, with government ID only as a fallback. It is not identity verification.
It depends on the goal: Sniffies for map-based cruising on the web, Feeld for open-minded or kink-curious dating, Pure for anonymous hookups. See the linked comparisons on this page.
Removing the app does not stop billing. Cancel in the Apple or Google store first, then follow the account deletion steps in the guide on this site.
Bottom Line
Grindr scores 7.2/10 (very good). It's best for: gay, bi, trans and queer people who want a large, nearby, no-matching-gate chat grid.
